Gareth Vanderhope is not only an accomplished naturopath, accredited dietitian, and public health nutritionist—he is a passionate educator reshaping the way we train tomorrow’s healthcare leaders. At the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine, Gareth’s work bridges traditional naturopathic philosophies with cutting-edge research and contemporary, person-centred approaches to practice.

From developing curriculum that champions cultural safety and holistic, systems-based thinking, to designing clinical experiences that prioritise real-world, interprofessional learning—Gareth is at the forefront of change. He’s ensuring that graduates are not only competent and confident practitioners, but also leaders equipped to make a lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of diverse communities.

Here, students work alongside peers in allied health—occupational therapy, osteopathy, midwifery, speech pathology, and more—fostering true collaborative care and breaking down the silos that too often separate health disciplines.

But Gareth’s vision goes even further.

Through a ground-breaking initiative, he is opening new clinical placement pathways in rural and remote Australia, aged care, and palliative settings—areas where naturopathic care has traditionally been underrepresented or absent. These experiences are not just transformative for the students; they are vital to broadening the reach of holistic healthcare and ensuring that compassionate, integrative care is available to those who need it most.

This work reflects the Centre’s broader mission: to create meaningful change from within the healthcare system, starting with education.
