A message from our Foundation Director
At the conclusion of the 2024 Giving Day campaign, Professor Jon Wardle says thank you to all who have contributed. He also gives an insight into some of the work being funded at the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine and some exciting announcements ahead.
Our Stories of Impact
Cathrina's Story
Cathrina is a clinically trained naturopath and holds a Master's degree in biomedical science. She is currently embarking on novel PhD research that could change the way we address chronic urinary tract infections and antimicrobial resistance.
Alana's Story
Dr Alana Gall currently leads a research program that centres around First Nations Australians traditional medicines and healing practices, aiming to protect and preserve these medicines for future generations, and improve accessibility for all First Nations communities across Australia.
Isabel's Story
Isabel is a graduate of the Master of Advanced Naturopathic Medicine degree who has been looking at the role that naturopathic and herbal medicine practitioners can play in disaster management.
Romy's Story
Associate Professor Romy Lauche has led several research projects on self-care, and partner-delivered care dedicated to optimising both physical and mental health outcomes for individuals affected by chronic conditions.
John's Story
Associate Professor Dr John Stevens has been an academic for over 35 years and for the last 25 of them he has taught and researched in health at Southern Cross University. John is a cofounder of the Lifestyle Medicine movement in Australia and is acknowledged for being a leader in the largest new global movement in health; Lifestyle Medicine.
Jon's Story
Professor Jon Wardle is a Professor of Public Health and the Director of the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine at Southern Cross University who works in Public Health, Primary Health Care, Health Law, Health Policy, Regulation and Traditional/Integrative Medicine.
Jessica's Story
Dr Jessica Bayes is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Southern Cross University (SCU) and completed her PhD (Public Health) in the field of nutritional psychiatry - the effect that foods, dietary patterns and nutrients have on mental health.
Gareth's Story
Gareth Vanderhope is an educator at NCNM who is pioneering health education by integrating traditional naturopathic philosophies with the latest research and contemporary approaches to evidence-based practice.
Kerrie's Story
Kerrie’s doctoral work is focused on developing models of policy integration of community herbalism, to support communities to develop, lead and sustain their own preferred models of integrative healthcare.
Peter's Story
Dr Peter Bai James completed the world’s first empirical study of the role of traditional medicine in post-viral treatment of Ebola survivors. This work has been integrated into national policies to ensure traditional medicines are included in long COVID and African migrant health.
Teena's Story
Master of Lifestyle Medicine graduate Teena Quinn was announced as the winner of the Rising Star category at the Lifestyle Medicine Awards presented by the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine in 2023. Legally blind, Teena was nominated for implementing lifestyle medicine in her counselling practice to improve the lives of her community.
Andrea's Story
Dr Andrea Bugarcic is a cell biologist with experience in infectious and neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Parkinson’s Disease. She is developing a research pathway where tradition, contemporary practice and science coexist, which is informing US National Institutes of Health recommendations for natural products research.
Rebecca's Story
Rebecca is a teaching academic at the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine and a dedicated researcher in the field of women’s health with a specific interest in endometriosis and pregnancy loss. One of her most significant undertakings in her research career was her PhD, which explored the clinical management of endometriosis in the Australian naturopathic profession.
Janet's Story
Dr Janet Schloss is recognised as one of the world’s leaders in integrative oncology and medicinal cannabis research. Her world-first clinical trial of medicinal cannabis in brain glioblastoma has progressed access to medicinal cannabis for oncology patients.
